Feature in the Baton Rouge Advocate

” Feufollet singer and multi-instrumentalist Chris Stafford co-founded the Cajun-Americana band when he was 11.

‘It’s something I’ve done my whole life,’ Stafford said of Feufollet. ‘I never thought of not doing it.’

The band recently celebrated its 20th anniversary with a performance at Festivals Acadiens et Créoles in Lafayette.

The only original member of the Grammy-nominated Feufollet, Stafford kept the band going through the years with a series of talented young musicians. Until 2015, the group featured original members Stafford, his drumming younger brother, Michael, and fiddler Chris Segura. Other members have included Taylor Guarisco of Givers fame, singer-songwriter Anna Laura Edmiston and Josh Caffery, the musician and folklorist who’s now director of the Center for Louisiana Studies at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. “

“It was weird because a lot of that stuff I recorded when I was pretty young — listening back to my playing and singing, it was strange to hear now. I had to take that part out of the equation and listen as objectively as I could and not be embarrassed,” Stafford says. “But, I mean, it is pretty crazy and amazing that, at my age, I have made all these records and had a band that’s lasted 20 years. I’m glad to celebrate that and present the history of it to people who might not be aware of it.”

20th Anniversary Feature in Offbeat Magazine

“As part of this landmark celebration, the group will release a 20-track commemorative CD on Feufollet Records entitled Prends Courage, christened after the raucous rock ’n’ roll track that opened 2008’s Cow Island Hop. The compilation features 17 tracks culled from Feufollet’s adventuresome seven albums and one 45-single; for the most part, it’s sequenced chronologically to show the band’s progression. The new tunes, says bassist and band manager Philippe Billeaudeaux, represent the three identities of the band. “Dans le magasin,” a Johnny Sonnier classic, is Feufollet’s nod to traditional dancehall Cajun. Kelli Jones’ “Going Fast” is transformed from a folksy pop tune into Keith Frank-styled zydeco. “Regard ensoleillé” is an unearthed trippy tune that was shelved when its writer, vocalist Anna Laura Edmiston left the band in 2012 to join—literally—the circus.”

OffBeat Magazine Nomination + Review

It’s always nice to be recognized by our cousins in New Orleans. We’ve been nominated for two Best of the Beat Awards by OffBeat Magazine- Best Cajun Artist and Best Cajun Album. Dan Wilging recently wrote a review for OffBeat of our latest release, “Baby’s on Fire.” Here’s what he had to say.

“Ah, vinyl—it once followed the footpath of dinosaurs, at least until club DJs spun it into hipster status and resurrected it from near extinction. Hence, the inspiration for Feufollet and Valcour Records’ debut 45, a random colored 7” vinyl.

‘Baby’s On Fire,’ the A side, takes Brian Eno’s iconic classic and applies jaunty Keith Frank accordion stylings on top of thrusty rhythms and layers of twangy guitars, fiddles and organ all skanking along. The B side “Clair de la lune” was first written and recorded by a 20-year-old Vin Bruce for Columbia Records in 1952. Compared to the original, Feufollet’s version is considerably more souped up and basks in a grandiose, mystical aura. Kelli Jones-Savoy’s high vocals lead the charge while the arrangement climaxes with Andrew Toups’ space-traveling cosmic keyboard ride. Midway through, Feufollet modulates keys, thereby injecting more energy and life into one of Bruce’s career-defining originals. If there were ever two songs that captured the essence of Feufollet, these would be them.”

New single “Baby’s on Fire” + the Great Boudini

Limited edition vinyl single on Valcour Records! Featuring full color artwork by Lafayette artist Connor Broussard and randomly-colored vinyls – each one is different! While supplies last…

Inspired by the recent stream of DJs in New Orleans spinning 45s of Louisiana music’s timeless standards, Feufollet has created a soon to be jukebox classic.  Brian Eno’s “Baby’s On Fire” gets a psychedelic, nouveau zydeco makeover, à la Keith Frank. Side B takes the vintage “Clair de la lune”, written by Cajun legend Vin Bruce, into a new wave second line two-step to complete the voyage into their cosmic Cajun dance land.
